About the Department
Bridging the gap between the classroom and global industry, the department has been continuously selected since 2021 for the Boeing Workshop conducted at IIT Kanpur, providing students with elite exposure to aerospace engineering. On-campus innovation is driven by specialized Centres of Excellence in collaboration with Royal Enfield and Blue Star, ensuring hands-on mastery of advanced automotive and HVAC systems. Student creativity and leadership are further showcased through the Technovator Technical Club and the publication of the E-Wall Magazine(MECH-VISTA), while practical training is anchored by newly developed, AICTE-compliant workshops and laboratories. These achievements, supported by highly qualified faculty, collectively ignite a spark for continuous learning and professional excellence in every student.
- After B.Tech (Core): Roles focus on Design (CAD), Production management, and Quality Control across automotive, HVAC, and power sectors. While at Entry Level Opportunities like GTE positions in top PSUs and MNCs provide foundational industrial and cross-departmental experience.
- After M.Tech (R&D): Specialized careers in Robotics, Simulation (FEA/CFD), and Industrial Data Science drive automation and predictive maintenance,while advance Leads to high-impact roles in Green Energy R&D and Scientific Research at premier labs like ISRO and DRDO.

Head of Department
Mr. Shiv Kumar Head of Department (Mechanical Engineering) With a distinguished career spanning over 17 years in technical education, Mr. Shiv Kumar embodies the department’s commitment to academic excellence and industrial innovation. Serving as the Assistant Professor and Head of the Department at GITM Lucknow since July 2009, he has been instrumental in shaping a curriculum that balances rigorous theoretical knowledge with practical, project-based learning. He is perusing his Ph.D from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU) and. His research interests are diverse, covering critical areas of mechanical engineering such as: Renewable Energy, solar energy, Thermal Engineering,
- Award-Winning Mentorship: Under his direct guidance, a student-led project for a Semi-automatic Pot making machine won the prestigious People’s Choice Award & 3rd Prize (Innovative Agriculture project) at the India International Science Festival (IISF) in Kolkata in 2019.
- Two projects are granted under in CSTUP project grant scheme for the consecutive year 2024-25 and 2025-26 under his mentorship.
- Academic Leadership: Kumar has served in vital university roles, including Zonal Technical Coordinator and Zonal Sports Coordinator for the Lucknow Zone of AKTU.
- Professional Development: He actively stays at the forefront of engineering trends, having completed multiple ATAL Faculty Development Programs in Sustainability Engineering, Green Technology, and Manufacturing.
- He has supervised over 50 undergraduate projects and 20 M.Tech thesis, ensuring that every student is equipped with the state-of-the-art tools necessary for modern engineering practice.

Ever since the establishment of the institution (in 2008), our primary goal for our students is to train future leaders with high-quality engineering education. The aim of the department of Mechanical Engineering is to disseminate knowledge and technologies through quality teaching, research and its applications in mechanical and allied disciplines.To bridge the gap between theory and practice, we have established specialized Centres of Excellence in collaboration with industry giants like Royal Enfield (Advanced Automotive Engineering) and Blue Star (HVAC and Thermal Systems).
We offer disciplines such as M. Tech. (Mechanical Engineering), B. Tech. and Diploma (Production). Our students have proved their mettle by getting placed in reputed industries of India and abroad. We as a family of Mechanical Engineering strive to excel in all the fields whether it is technical or sports activities, which shows the hunger for knowledge and overall development of students as a whole.
The Department has state of the art laboratories besides knowledgeable, experienced and dedicated faculties and staff. The students are inculcated with fundamental and technical knowledge to enable them to translate the theoretical knowledge into practical applications. Conferences, workshops and seminars are organized periodically which helps both the staff and students to updates themselves with industries latest happenings. The Department has also proved its potential by guiding students in projects sponsored by the Institution of engineering.

- Engineering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
- Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.
- Design/development of solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.

BOEING NATIONAL AEROMODELLING FESTIVAL-BEIA” in IIT Kanpur under “TECHKRITI
Description: “A team of 5 members from the Department of Mechanical Engineering club “TECHNOVATOR”, GITM in association with Innovation Cell, attended a 2-days workshop on “BOEING NATIONAL AEROMODELLING FESTIVAL-BEIA” on 6th – 7th January 2024 in IIT Kanpur under “TECHKRITI”. A total of 390 teams applied for the workshop from various institutions across the country. In total, 30 teams were nominated, including our team, ‘STARWINGS’.
Participating in such workshops is a great way to enhance their knowledge and skills in the field of aeromodelling for the students of Mechanical Engineering. In the workshop, they gained knowledge from experienced professionals under the mentorship of Prof. Shantanu Bhattacharya through practical exposure and also made a network with fellow participants. Such events contribute significantly to the overall learning experience and personal development of individuals interested in mechanical engineering and innovation. All the members of the team got the certificate of participation and were encouraged for the next round.

Mr Shiv Kumar Tripathi has completed his M. Tech (CAD) from Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Technical University Lucknow. He has more than 10 years of teaching experience. After completing his B. Tech in the year 2007, he started his carrier in teaching. In his teaching career, he has supervised more than 15 postgraduate and more than 60 undergraduate students. As an author and co-author, he published more than 15 research papers.
